Are My Vintage Comic Books Worth Anything?

Debbie Porter

This collection of Marvel The Avengers Silver Age comics is set to be incredibly popular at our upcoming Fine Art sale, with an estimated sale price of £50 – £100

Determining the value of a comic book or comic book collection can be difficult. Are those stacks of old comics sat collecting dust in the attic worth anything? Is there something in your collection that will have avid collectors tripping over themselves to buy?

Here at Potteries Auctions, we can help determine the worth of your comics and sell them at auction. Check out some of the highlights from the range of vintage comics we have upcoming in our November Fine Art sale throughout this article and in the video from our Facebook page below, or click here for the full listings of comic books available at online auction this weekend.

How Do I Know If My Comic Books Are Valuable?

There are many factors to consider when it comes to deciding whether your vintage comic books are worth anything that include, but aren’t limited to, the condition that your comics are in and when they were first published.

It goes without saying that the better condition your comics are in, the more attractive they’ll be to a prospective buyer. Factors include bent or torn pages, discolouration or if a comic has been marked or defaced in any way. However, if your comics aren’t in the best physical condition then don’t fret too much. If your comic is particularly rare or highly collectable, for example it might contain the first appearance of a character or have been printed in a very limited quantity, then it may still be worth a considerable amount.

Comic book collectors are generally more concerned with vintage comicsmost of which were published in the 1930s to mid-1970s. The easiest way to determine if your comics can be considered “vintage” is by looking at the cover price. The valuable ones will have 10c, 12c, 15c, 20c, or 25c on the cover, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule. The four categories comics fall into are Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Copper to Modern Age, with the golden age, naturally, being the oldest and potentially most valuable (from the 1930s – mid-1950s) and copper to modern age being the most recent (from the 1980s to present day).
