Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to post my gold, jewellery or coins?

Yes. Your free postage pack includes clear instructions on how to securely package your items before sending them to us. Once received, your items are logged by our specialist team and handled with the same care and security as the thousands of lots entrusted to Potteries Auctions each year.

What items can I send?

We regularly value gold jewellery, silver jewellery, broken jewellery, gold sovereigns, gold coins, silver coins, proof coin sets, bullion and inherited collections. If you’re unsure whether your items are suitable, simply request a free postage pack and our specialists will be happy to advise.

Can I send broken or damaged jewellery?

Absolutely. Broken chains, single earrings, damaged rings and scrap gold can still hold significant value. We regularly assess items in all conditions.

How much does the valuation cost?

Our valuation service is completely free and there is no obligation to sell.

What happens after my items arrive?

Our specialists will carefully examine your items and provide a professional valuation. We’ll then contact you to discuss the results and advise whether an auction sale or immediate purchase offer is likely to achieve the best outcome.

Am I obliged to sell my items?

No. You are under no obligation to proceed after receiving your valuation.

Why choose an auction rather than a cash-for-gold service?

Many gold buyers simply pay based on the metal value. At Potteries Auctions, we assess whether your jewellery, coins or collectables could achieve a higher price through auction, potentially increasing the amount you receive.

How long does the process take?

Once your items arrive, we aim to complete valuations as quickly as possible. Timescales can vary depending on the quantity and type of items submitted, but our team will keep you informed throughout the process.

Can I receive an immediate offer?

In many cases, yes. Depending on the items submitted, we may be able to provide an immediate purchase offer or recommend an auction sale if we believe it will achieve a better result.

What happens if I decide not to sell?

If you decide not to proceed, we can arrange for your items to be returned to you.

How do I get paid?

For immediate purchase offers, payment is typically made by bank transfer once the offer has been accepted. For auction sales, you may be eligible for an advance payment of up to 75% of the low estimate value, with the remaining balance paid following completion of the auction and settlement process.

Can I send gold sovereigns and collectible coins?

Yes. We specialise in valuing gold sovereigns, rare coins, proof sets and collector coinage. Many coins are worth significantly more than their precious metal content alone, so it is important to have them professionally assessed.

Do you accept inherited jewellery and collections?

Yes. We regularly help clients who have inherited jewellery, coins and precious metal collections and would like an expert valuation before deciding whether to sell.

How do I request a free postage pack?

Simply complete the form on this page and we’ll send your free postage pack directly to your door.

What if my jewellery contains gemstones or diamonds?

Many items are worth more than their gold or silver content alone. Our specialists will assess any gemstones, diamonds, designer signatures and other features that may add value. In some cases, jewellery can achieve significantly higher prices at auction than it would if sold solely for its precious metal content.
