History of Staffordshire William Pitt Spine rebound 16cm x 26cm 8vo The pencil notes in this book are believed to be in the hand of Enoch Wood and were considered to be of significant historical importance by the Potteries Museum. Pencil notes in margins of Pitt's History of Staffordshire relating to the inception of Josiah Wedgwood's ''Queen's Ware''. (1) ''NB See the gradual progress, first used by Enoch Booth.'' (2) ''This is Cream Colour Ware.'' (3) ''Here Cream Coloured Ware as it was afterwards named,(from its yellow appearance) by the inhabitants of Burslem, was generally made by the manufacturers. Mr Josiah Wedgwood sold some pieces to the Queen and she ordered a table set, after which it was called Queen's Ware. The forms were shown to her in White Stone or Salt Glaze for her to make choice of a Pattern or Form. She made choice of a set which my father Aaron Wood had last modeled for the Potters called Barley Corn Pattern, but she wished to have the Barley Corn taken out, & to be left plain, which was done, & I helped to scrape it off some of the pieces. This was afterwards called Queen's Pattern or Queen's Ware. (4)After this the King ordered a Service but wished to have it still more smooth & Plain my Father & Brother William then cut off the partitions which were left, which had divided the Barley Corn into compartments, This was then called the Royal Pattern. (5) Two pencil sketches Enoch Wood was apprenticed to Josiah Wedgwood, Wood's father Aaron was employed at all the major potteries, Enoch's brother William worked for Wedgwood's from 1767 to 1808. The Queen's endorsement was of huge importance to Wedgwood who became as a result Potter to the Queen.
